Scottish Championships - David Horne
The Scottish Standard Distance Triathlon Championships returned to Strathclyde Country Park on 24 May 2015, which was the venue for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014. You’ll probably remember watching Ali Brownlee smashing it up on TV.
This is the third time I’ve competed here. The first time was back in 2012, where I qualified for European Championships in Alanya, Turkey, finishing 3rdin my age group (M40-44). Happy days.
Check out the race stats below, that says it all.
* my wife, Jane, timed the swim from start gun to leaving the water at 21:22 ;-) awesomely rapid for me.
My fastest swim over 1500m ever. Really happy with this especially as the start to the first buoy was complete carnage, with over 200 swimmers, converging, arms and legs everywhere. Much of this first 200m was spent swimming breast stroke - trying not to drown, haha.
On the bike I felt good and strong. It’s a tough old course, which undulates over seven-laps. There are no flat sections and your cadence is always changing trying to cope with the ascents and descents.
Onto the run, as usual my legs didn’t really turn up until after 2.5km. But thereafter, I got quicker and quicker and quicker and was flying over the last 2km.
5th Vet (old fart), 17th Overall in Scotland.
Although 2:06:25 is not blisteringly fast. This time would have put me in 2ndplace on the podium last year. It seems the field was stacked with more faster guys.
The main difference between last year and this year - is I have a new coach (Blair Davies - http://blairdavies.wpengine.com). He has been coaching me for around 10 months now.
It’s his coaching support that has definitely made the difference. Just look at the results.
